Woman with broken leg watches meteor shower during Jordan River rescue

A woman who suffered a badly broken leg while vacationing near Jordan River got an unexpected show in the sky while waiting to be transported to hospital.

Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue (JDF SAR) said its team was called out Wednesday, August 12th, after the woman fell from a swing and badly injured her leg.

The woman and her family were vacationing in the area and had not travelled far from their accommodations when the accident happened.

Despite only planning to be out for a short distance, rescuers said the family had packed all of the essentials — something the team was particularly happy to see when they arrived.

JDF SAR members packaged the woman onto a stretcher before evacuating her from the area with the help of a stretcher wheel.

But amid what was undoubtedly a painful evening for the woman, there was at least one memorable moment.

While the group waited for an ambulance to arrive, rescuers and the patient were able to watch a meteor shower together.

“One of the highlights of the call — for both our team and the patient — was getting to watch the meteor shower together while we waited for BC Ambulance to arrive,” JDF SAR said.

As it turns out, they picked quite the night to be waiting under the stars.

The rescue took place as the annual Perseid meteor shower was reaching its peak, giving the injured woman and rescuers a front-row seat to one of the most anticipated celestial events of the summer.

JDF SAR also thanked Brett, a park operator from the Juan de Fuca Trail, who remained with the injured woman until rescuers arrived.

Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 37 stood by in case additional assistance was required.

The search and rescue team wished the woman a “smooth and speedy recovery.”
