The City of Victoria has released the first details of a replacement playground for Stadacona Park following a fire which rendered the playground unusable.
In March, a suspicious fire caused significant damage to the playground.
Since the blaze, City staff have prioritized replacing it so the community can get back to enjoying its inclusive and accessible play features.
Repairs will be made to the sections of the playground that were damaged by the fire, bringing the playground back to its previous state.
The City says it wants this park to be able to support play for children of various ages and abilities, as much of the playground was intentionally built to be accessible before the fire.
Construction is slated to begin this summer and will be completed by fall 2026.
During construction, the playground will be closed for safety reasons, though the rest of Stadacona Park will stay open, including green space, tennis courts and trails.
There will be fencing around the playground while construction crews work to install the new playground.
The initial playground that was burnt down cost the City an estimated $600,000 to build.
The project budget to replace the damaged sections of the playground is $350,000, funded from the City’s contingency budget.
In addition to that funding, the City received $11,562 from a community-led donation campaign to offset the cost.
