How friendly are your neighbours?

According to a list released by Nextdoor, several Vancouver Island communities are among the friendliest in the province.

Langford, Courtenay and Nanaimo all cracked the top five on the list of the 20 most friendly cities in BC, while Parksville, Esquimalt, Sidney and Victoria all made an appearance as well.

Courtenay had the highest ranking on the list coming in as the runner-up, with Langford at number three, Nanaimo at four, Parksville at six, Esquimalt at 10, Sidney at 13 and Victoria ranked as the 16th friendliest city in the province.

According to Nextdoor’s ranking, the friendliest city in British Columbia is Delta.

Nextdoor says it calculates a friendliness rating for each city based on neighbour behaviour on the platform.

The behaviour tracked includes things like whether posts have a positive or negative tone to them, the number of fulfilled requests from neighbours, the number of free items posted and welcome posts with responses from neighbours.

With this ranking system, Delta scored a 100, Courtenay scored a 97 with Langord, Nanaimo and Parksville all scoring a 96.

The platform also ranks the friendliest neighbourhoods in a given city.

Victoria’s friendliest neighbourhood was Oaklands, with Fairfield and James Bay following close behind.

Fernwood, Burnside, Gonzales and Vic West rounded out the list.

Nextdoor describes itself as a network for neighbours to receive trusted information, give and get help and build real-world connections with those nearby.

“Building connections in the real world is a universal human need,” the website states.

“That truth, and the reality that neighbourhoods are among the most important communities in our lives, have been guiding principles for Nextdoor since the beginning.”
