Nanaimo RCMP utilize police helicopter to target dangerous driving

Nanaimo RCMP utilized a police helicopter over the weekend in an effort to target dangerous driving. 

On Sunday August 9th, Comox Air Services Air 8 aided in observing traffic in an initiative that resulted from concerns raised by the public regarding dangerous driving behaviours, particularly among motorcyclists.

Police say the aerial support provided officers on the ground with an advantage in having a bird’s eye view of traffic, making it easier to spot dangerous drivers and speeders. 

As a result of this endeavour, police observed 46 traffic violations, issued 33 charges, eight warnings, served one 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and impounded four vehicles. 

Police say that around one-third of the violations were issued to motorcycle riders.

• 10 charges for speeding
• Five charges for excessive speeding 
• 10 charges for no-insurance tickets
• 14 other charges for various violations resulting in 10 tickets and four warnings
• Seven Motor Vehicle Act Regulation violations resulting in four tickets and three warnings
• One impaired driver who received a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition
• Four vehicle impoundments, including two charges for excessive speed and two for stunting-related offences

According to Nanaimo RCMP, one incident in particular highlighted the effectiveness of aerial support. 

At around 9 p.m., police were preparing to stop a motorcyclist without a licence plate. 

Police believe that the rider noticed the helicopter overhead and immediately pulled over to the side of the road before they were pulled over. 

The officer at the scene says that when approached, the rider pointed toward the helicopter, recognizing that police had a clear view of his movements.

“This enforcement initiative was undertaken in response to concerns we have received from the public regarding dangerous driving behaviours on our roadways by motor vehicles and motorcyclist’s [sic] alike,” said Inspector Donovan Tait, Officer in Charge of the Nanaimo RCMP Detachment. 

“The addition of Air 8 provided officers with a valuable perspective that enhanced safety and allowed us to more effectively monitor traffic throughout the area.”
