Man apprehended under Mental Health Act after entering traffic at McKenzie off-ramp

A man was taken to hospital Tuesday morning after he was seen entering traffic and approaching vehicles on a busy highway off-ramp in Saanich.

According to Saanich Police, officers were called shortly after 7 a.m. on August 4th for reports of a man acting erratically and entering traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway off-ramp at McKenzie Avenue.

Video circulating on social media appears to show the man walking toward passing vehicles as motorists attempt to manoeuvre around him.

At one point, the man appears to come into contact with the side of a passing pickup truck before falling to the ground.

His prosthetic leg can also be seen coming off during the incident.

Police said officers located the man and apprehended him under the Mental Health Act. He was then transported to hospital for an assessment.

“The male did not suffer any apparent physical injuries during this incident,” Saanich Police said in an email to Victoria Buzz.

Several witnesses alleged online that the man had also attempted to get into passing vehicles, although police did not confirm that claim in their statement.

A woman who identified the pickup truck’s driver as her boyfriend said the man jumped toward the vehicle and disputed claims that the driver had run him over.

She added that the driver immediately called 911 but did not feel safe remaining at the scene.

Saanich Police thanked the motorists who called to report the incident.
