Lotto ticket bought on Vancouver Island wins Surrey woman $5M

A lottery ticket purchased on Vancouver Island has turned a Surrey woman into BC’s newest multimillionaire.

Jane D. won the $5 million Classic Jackpot in the August 8th Lotto 6/49 draw with a ticket purchased at the Rexall on Willow Street in Chemainus.

She discovered she had the winning ticket while shopping for groceries at Country Grocer on Cedar Road in Nanaimo.

“I didn’t know how to react,” Jane recalled.

“The cashier was almost more ecstatic than me!”

Her husband was waiting in the car when she returned with more than just the groceries.

“My husband waited for me in the car to bring out groceries, then I told him,” she said.

“He didn’t believe me at first, then I showed him the validation slip and he counted the zeroes.”

Jane plans to use some of the winnings to renovate her home and contribute to her investments, but she also has something more relaxing in mind.

“I want to go on a trip and get a suite on a cruise!”

When asked how it feels to become a millionaire, Jane said the win has opened up new possibilities.

“It’s very exciting. I have more flexibility now.”

According to the BC Lottery Corporation, players in the province have redeemed more than $50 million in Lotto 6/49 winnings so far in 2026.

Lotto 6/49 draws take place Wednesday and Saturday evenings. Its Classic Jackpot is always worth $5 million.
