There’s a good old-fashioned soap box derby coming to Nanaimo this weekend!
On Saturday, August 15th, the Hub City Soap Box Derby will return to Nanaimo from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., bringing dozens of gravity-powered vehicles to descend down a section of Millstream Parkway.
This annual non-motorized race is a favourite for children and adults in the area every year, serving as a fundraiser for the Child Development Centre Nanaimo.
The event welcomes kids and adults alike, with a child division offering 40 spots for six- to 16-year-old kids to participate with their homemade vehicles, and a division with 20 spots for adults and businesses to participate.
Racers can build their carts using a customizable kit supplied by the event’s organizers, with many prizes available for fastest cart, most creative cart and more.

Friends and family are encouraged to participate as pit crew or spectators to help cheer on their carts as they cross the finish line.
The race will begin on Bowen Avenue and race down Millstream Parkway to the Nanaimo Curling Club where a concession area will be held with local vendors offering up some eats for hungry racers and spectators.
Racer registration will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., with qualifying races lasting from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. The top racers in their divisions will then race in a final heat starting at 12:30 p.m. to decide the winner.
