If you hear people howling like wolves in James Bay tomorrow, don’t be alarmed!
On Thursday, August 13th, the Dog Walk for Wolves will be taking place at Beacon Hill Park to celebrate International Wolf Day and help raise awareness about wolf conservation on Vancouver Island.
The event’s focus is a dog walk starting from Beacon Hill Park and ending at the legislative lawns, with a stop at Victoria Centennial Fountain to visit the bronze wolf statue.
There will also be a wolf howling contest and ample photo opportunities, with the famous Victoria drag artist Eddie-licious serving as emcee for the occasion.
The event is hosted by Pacific Wild and aims to bring attention to wolf culling initiatives in British Columbia, where helicopters are used to kill wolves across the province.
According to the BC SPCA, these culls have resulted in the deaths of over 2,800 wolves at the cost of over $13 million to the province.
“While we celebrate dogs as family, wolves in the wild are being gunned down from helicopters because the BC government decided it was easier to kill wolves than fix the habitat loss actually driving caribou decline,” the Pacific Wild website reads.
Organizers hope that the event will catalyze similar events in other communities, and have created a toolkit, found here, for others to use.
