It’s going to be a big weekend for Victoria foodies and those interested in learning more about where their food comes from.
In addition to VegFest happening in the Inner Harbour, there’s another big event celebrating local food, growers and makers in the region.
On Saturday, August 15th and Sunday, August 16th, the Flavour Trails Signature Weekend Festival will be marking 20 years of celebrating local agriculture with events and experiences across the Saanich Peninsula.
The peninsula-wide festival weekend invites residents and visitors alike the opportunity to taste, explore and appreciate local agriculture by bringing together more than 40 farms, gardens, eateries and more across North Saanich, Central Saanich and Saanich for two days of self-guided exploration.
The event features a festival map, where users can create their own flavour trail route through the Peninsula to discover and meet the people behind what’s being grown, made and served locally, all while experiencing special weekend activities along the way.
To play, festival-goers will start by picking up a free flavour hunt card and festival weekend map at one of the Trail Hubs.
The hubs are in several locations across the region, with the North Saanich Farm Market and Fickle Fig Farm Market in North Saanich, Silver Rill Corn in Central Saanich and Urban Oasis Living in Saanich all serving as trail hubs.
With the hunt card acquired, explorers will then go to any of the 40 participating businesses on the map to complete five challenges.
The challenges
- Meet a Maker — Talk with a farmer, grower, chef or food maker
- Taste the Trail — Try something locally grown or made
- Learn Something New — Discover something you didn’t know about food, farming, plants or the land
- Discover Somewhere New — Visit a Flavour Trails stop you haven’t explored before
- Explore the Trail —Visit at least three Flavour Trails stops
Along the way, players will need to keep their eyes out for one person wearing the distinctive ‘Secret Flavour’ button. Once found, saying “I found the secret flavour” may prompt a prize from the person wearing the button.
Those who complete all five challenges can return their hunt card to any of the Trail Hubs for a 20th anniversary Flavour Trails button and an entry into a grand prize draw.
In an age where food sustainability and agriculture is front and centre, this fun, family-friendly activity is a great way to support local farmers and learn more about where your food comes from.
