There’s an interesting new competition coming to Victoria’s Inner Harbour this weekend!
Red Bull Log Drivers Canada will be taking place on Saturday, July 18th, honouring the historic log driving profession in Canada.
The event will begin with timed seeding from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by the main event and awards from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will be free for spectators, and contestants can register for $20 here.
The competition will see 128 contestants run across a floating course constructed of logs and other obstacles and compete for the top prize of $1,500.
Log driving has a long history in the country. It was one of the most dangerous professions in Canada, and also one of the most crucial.
Before roads and trucks, downed trees would travel from forest to mill by the waterways, and log drivers were responsible for guiding this timber through its course, balancing on logs while doing so.
It’s not a job for the faint of heart.
Historically, drivers would live in bush camps and spend 13-hour days armed with a long iron-tipped pole, guiding timber onto its next destination.
The profession and Canadian logging was a big part of the rapid expansion of Canadian, American and English cities.
As roads were built and trucks were improved, the profession died away and is now honoured as a sport in Canada.
Red Bull Log Drivers Canada will pay homage to the profession and see if anyone’s still got what it takes to call themselves a log driver.
