Sidney Street Market cancelled tonight due to thunderstorm risk

Anyone planning to head to Beacon Avenue in Sidney tonight will have to wait another week.

The Sidney Street Market scheduled for Thursday, July 16th has been cancelled due to the risk of thunderstorms and lightning during market hours.

Organizers of the weekly market said the decision was made following consultation with Environment Canada regarding a significant weather system expected to move through the region.

“This decision was not made lightly,” organizers said.

“Our first priority is always the safety of our vendors, performers, volunteers, staff and the thousands of visitors who join us each week.”

Environment Canada’s forecast calls for a 70% chance of showers Thursday afternoon, along with a risk of thunderstorms through the afternoon and evening.

Winds could reach 50 km/h near the Juan de Fuca Strait, while the temperature is expected to reach a high of 20°C.

According to the Weather Network, thunderstorms could develop across Vancouver Island and other parts of BC’s south coast, with some storms potentially bringing heavy rain, strong winds and hail.

No weather alerts were in effect for Greater Victoria as of the time of publication, but the highest thunderstorm risk is expected during the evening.

The Sidney Street Market is expected to return next Thursday, July 23rd.
