Pedestrian killed in fatal motor vehicle collision: Nanaimo RCMP

Nanaimo RCMP are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that killed a pedestrian on Departure Bay Road near Argyle Street. 

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 23rd, and prompted a response from police, fire crews as well as paramedics. 

So far, the preliminary investigation has indicated the pedestrian was struck while standing next to his parked vehicle. 

Police say both the driver and victim were males in their late 70s.

As of this publication, police are still unsure what led the SUV to leave the roadway and hit the pedestrian.  

Paramedics transported the victim to the hospital for medical treatment as he suffered serious life-threatening injuries. 

However, despite the efforts of medical staff, the victim later succumbed to his injuries.

“This is a tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of a life and has deeply affected everyone involved,” said Inspector Donovan Tait, Operations Officer for the Nanaimo RCMP. 

“Investigators are continuing to examine all aspects of the collision to determine exactly what occurred.”

Police say the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Following the collision, an RCMP collision reconstructionist attended the scene and Departure Bay Road was temporarily closed while investigators gathered evidence.

According to investigators, the road conditions were dry and in good condition at the time of the collision and there is no indication that alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in the crash. 

The investigation remains ongoing.
