A man who was previously charged with aggravated assault following a violent incident in Saanich last week is now facing a murder charge after the victim died from their injuries.
In an update released Wednesday, Saanich Police confirmed the victim of the July 3rd assault has died.
“Our condolences to their family and friends,” police said in the statement.
As a result, the charge against 30-year-old Suleyman Budak has been upgraded from aggravated assault to murder.
The investigation has also been transferred from the Saanich Police Major Crime Unit to the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU), which will now lead the case.
The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. on Friday, July 3rd, in the 4000 block of Quadra Street.
When the charges were first announced earlier this week, police said the victim had been taken to hospital in critical condition and that Budak had been arrested at the scene.
Investigators also confirmed the victim and the suspect were known to each other.
No additional details about the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death or the upgraded charge have been released.
