Impaired driving cases jump 74% in Sidney and North Saanich: RCMP

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP removed seven impaired drivers from local roads during a four-day enforcement period last week.

In a media release, police said the drivers were stopped between July 16th and 19th as part of several impaired driving investigations.

Four drivers received Immediate Roadside Prohibitions, resulting in 90-day licence suspensions and their vehicles being impounded for 30 days.

Another driver is facing Criminal Code impaired driving charges due to what police described as aggravating factors, including the person’s driving history.

Two additional drivers received short-term driving bans.

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP said the number of impaired drivers removed from local roads has increased by 74% so far this year compared with the same period in 2025.

“This increase reflects our continued focus on proactive traffic enforcement and our commitment to road safety,” said Staff Sergeant Conley.

“Impaired driving is entirely preventable, and our members will continue to target drivers who put themselves and others at risk.”

Police are reminding drivers that impaired driving can result in licence suspensions, vehicle impoundments, fines, higher insurance costs, criminal charges and a criminal record.

Anyone planning to consume alcohol is encouraged to arrange a sober driver, take a taxi, use public transit or find a safe place to stay.

Anyone who believes a driver may be impaired should call 911 when it is safe to do so.
