Capital Bike is hosting multiple themed community bike rides throughout the capital region so participants can get out and ride, meet new cyclists and learn a bit about the community.
All are free, family friendly and accessible to all levels of cyclists.
The first is a ‘Discover Rural Saanich’ ride, which will take place on Sunday, July 26th.
On this community ride, cyclists will be taken on a scenic route through rural Saanich to discover some of the region’s quieter roads and its beautiful trails.
Along the way, participants will stop at the popular Mosi Bakery to recharge and pick up a snack before returning to its starting point at Saanich Municipal Hall via the Elk Lake Trail.
“Whether you’re joining us for the scenery, the bakery or simply a fun morning ride with great company, we’d love to have you along,” wrote Capital Bike in a media release.
This ride is 29.6 kilometres long and cyclists can anticipate a moderate pace of 17 to 22 km/h.
The ride is almost booked up fully, with only eight spots left as of this publication.
On Saturday, August 8th, the organization is hosting a ‘History Ride’ with John Adams.
John Adams is a renowned and beloved historian who knows all-things Victoria.
During the ride, cyclists are invited to slow down, look around and discover the stories hidden in the streets they ride every day.
Adams will enlighten participants on the people, landmarks and notable moments that helped shape Victoria.
This ride will begin from Central Park and riders can anticipate a moderate pace of 15 to 20 km/h.
The next themed ride will be the ‘Shelbourne Celebration Ride,’ taking place on Thursday, August 13th.
On this, riders will celebrate the completion of Saanich’s new Shelbourne protected bike lanes.
Following the ride, there will be an official ribbon cutting for those who want to partake in the relaxed community ride, and be among the first to experience the new cycling infrastructure.
Capital Bike noted that there will be a limited number of complimentary e-bikes and e-scooters available for participants without a bike.
This is expected to be a 20 to 30 minute ride at an easy and accessible pace.
Next is the ‘Architecture by Bike’ ride, which will take place on Sunday, August 23rd.
Beginning at the beautiful grounds of the Glenlyon Norfolk School, this moderately paced, guided ride will allow participants to experience Victoria from a whole new perspective.
Together riders will explore the unique buildings, neighbourhoods and hidden design details that make the area so special.
From historic landmarks to distinctive neighbourhood character, those who are curious about design, history or are simply looking for a fun afternoon ride can expect this excursion to be enlightening.
Though it’s a ways away, Capital Bike also has registration open for the annual ‘National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Ride’ on September 30th.
This ride is put on every year by Capital Bike in partnership with the Victoria Orange Shirt Day Society (XE XE SMUN’ EEM) and the Songhees Nation.
“This meaningful community event brings together hundreds of people from across the region for a morning of learning, reflection and connection,” wrote Capital Bike.
“The day begins with opening presentations before participants ride together, escorted by police and Capital Bike Ride Marshals, to the South Island Powwow.”
The ride is around 9.2 kilometres, family-friendly and suitable for riders of all ages and abilities.
Registration is now open for the Reconciliation Day Ride, and organizers are also looking for ride marshals to help support this community event.
