Canadian government makes changes to modernize passport renewal process

The Canadian government has officially launched an online passport renewal portal to modernize the process. 

The goal of this change was to make the process more secure, user-friendly and to reduce in-person visits to government offices that handle passport renewals. 

All eligible adult Canadians will be able to utilize the portal when renewing their passports. The process will have applicants submit their renewal application online, along with their photo and payment digitally. 

“Canadians expect passport services that work for their lives,” said Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.

“Expanding online renewal gives eligible Canadians a simpler, more convenient way to renew their passports, without unnecessary barriers or delays.”

Those seeking a renewal will no longer be required to mail documents or visit a Service Canada Centre if they choose to apply online. 

The Canadian government noted this change will also benefit those who face barriers to in-person service, including those living in rural or remote communities and those with mobility challenges. 

Despite the launch of the portal, those who prefer in-person and mail-in services can still visit a Service Centre Canada in order to complete their renewal.

The government has also guaranteed that applications will be processed within 30 business days or the passport is free.
