The Capital Regional District (CRD) has announced that a new accessible paddlecraft launch is now open at the Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park.
The goal of this new paddlecraft launch is to make getting out on the water easier and more user friendly for those with different accessibility needs.
This new launch is located at the Brookleigh Boat Launch and includes a wheelchair-accessible ramp, a step-free dock that was installed earlier this year and a custom paddlecraft launch system designed to help people enjoy paddling on Elk Lake.
Other key features include a seated transfer bench from wheelchair height, overhead railings, and a partially submerged launch area with handrails along the sides to support safe, stable and independent entry into the water.
Through endeavours such as this one, the CRD is trying to improve accessibility across its regional parks system, upgrading park infrastructure to be inclusive and accessible for everyone.
According to the CRD, an estimated one-in-five people between the ages of 15 and 64 live with one or more disabilities.
Their newly upgraded launch will help those people and others by providing safer, easier access to the water and removing barriers to outdoor recreation.
Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park is one of the capital region’s most popular summer hotspots, with beaches, trails, boating opportunities and a range of accessible amenities, including an accessible fishing dock.
The CRD says that the addition of the new paddlecraft launch will further enhance the park’s reputation as an inclusive destination for all.
Local contractor Jenkins Marine and the Recreation Adaptive Society (RAD Society) worked to design, build and test the custom launch system.
