Attention ocean and wildlife lovers!

A new film just arrived at IMAX® Victoria that’s going to make you hold your breath in suspense.

Sea Otters: A Wild Family Adventure by K2 studios opened at IMAX® Victoria on May 15th, and is an impressive showcase of BC’s natural beauty, highlighting a tale of hardship and adversity for a pair of local sea otters.

Sea Otters follows the lives of mum and pup duo Bella and Finn as they navigate the harsh winter around Vancouver Island and Finn’s formative first few months. The homegrown film comes from directors Sara Bedard and Annabel Robinson with narration by Joe Geoffrey.

“It’s a story about sea otters, it’s the story of a mum and pup, but it’s also a showcase of the island and its beauty to the rest of the world,” said Paul Wild, VP of Film Distribution at K2 Studios.

The film highlights the stunning natural elegance and might of nature on the west coast of Vancouver Island, including Nootka Island, Kyuquot Sound, and Winter Harbour.

Both topside and underwater shots are as integral to the film as Bella and Finn.

“There’s really two parts to the film. One is the story of sea otters Bella and Finn, a mum and a pup, and the other is that relationship in the context of the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island,” said Wild.

To add to the thrilling and sublime nature of this film, the crew had to fight a brutal winter just like the otters.

Facing an unexpected storm and the shy nature of the otters, the crew had to get creative to capture many of the film’s striking images.

“It was wet and cold and miserable in the snow, but they got the shots, which were actually quite unique in the film. [The filming] was done over the winter months, so it gives you a sense of what the weather’s like on the island,” Wild said.

“One of the cinematographers, they camouflaged with seaweed. There was a floating raft of seaweed, and it helped get those more intimate shots.”

Wild went on to explain that otters are skittish by nature, and that they never seemed to let humans get too close. The crew spent time and let the otters get acquainted with them to show that they weren’t a threat.

And it paid off. Filmmakers say the film captures some of the most private otter behaviour ever caught on film.
