Vancouver Island residents often hear stories about cougars roaming around, but rarely get the opportunity to see them in their natural habitat.
A recent TikTok video by creator Jenna Evans shows a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with one of these mysterious and majestic creatures.
The video, which has been viewed over 280,000 times as of Wednesday morning, is quickly going viral. It shows the animal swimming alongside Evans’ boat before climbing a rocky cliff and disappearing from view.
Evans, who was prawning in the area, told Victoria Buzz that she didn’t think the video would be so popular.
“I created the account mainly for outdoor activity, and never expected to have a video go so viral,” said Evans.
“I’m so thankful to everyone for all the love and support on the video. These are beautiful animals and never in my life did I think I would see one swimming in the ocean.”

While we might all wish we could get a glimpse like Evans, she wants to remind everyone that these animals can be incredibly dangerous to humans and should be left alone whenever possible.
She hopes that anyone else who might come in contact with one of these predators remembers to give them space.
“They are wild animals and you never know what could happen. Keep your distance and be safe.”
BC Government guidelines say that in the case of encountering a cougar in the wild, “back away slowly, ensuring the animal has a clear avenue of escape.”
