Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre in Metchosin needs volunteers to help care for wildlife

This week, the BC SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre (Wild ARC) in Metchosin put out a call to action for anyone interested in volunteering.

They are currently seeking volunteers to fill a variety of roles to support the care of injured, orphaned and sick wild animals on Vancouver Island.

Wild ARC is largely volunteer-powered and relies heavily on the commitment of animal lovers in the community who want to make a tangible difference.

The organization cares for over 2,000 wild animals every year, with most arriving between April and September when most animals have babies, making both the parents and young vulnerable.

“It is so rewarding; the feeling that you get of contributing back to something that is so vital,” said a volunteer at Wild ARC.

Volunteers at Wild ARC can help in a myriad of ways based on their interests and skills.

The animal care team helps keep enclosures clean and animals happy while the wildlife chefs help to prepare species-specific diets for the animals in their care.

The organization also recruits “spit ‘n’ polish” volunteers who are crucial to keeping the centre running smoothly by cleaning kennels, doing laundry and washing dishes.

Furthermore, Wild ARC requires maintenance volunteers who enjoy fixing things as well as transport volunteers who act as “animal ambulances” to make sure distressed wildlife arrives at the centre as soon as possible.

Lastly, because Wild ARC is so active in the community, participating in local markets, fairs and other events, volunteers are needed for these activations in order to raise awareness about local wildlife while highlighting Wild ARC’s work.

“In 2025, volunteers donated over 17,000 hours of their time helping our core rehabilitation staff provide life-saving care to wild animals in need,” said Ashley Currie, manager, BC SPCA Wild ARC.

“We rely on many helping hands to care for wild animals, keep up with repairs, transport wildlife, and educate the public about our work and coexisting with local wildlife.”

Wild ARC likes to recruit for volunteer positions that range from four to six months, with shifts varying length and frequency.

Those looking to help Wild ARC’s cause can find more information on volunteering on the organization’s website.
