Saanich Police are warning residents after two cougar sightings were reported in the Gordon Head area late Saturday and early Sunday.

According to Saanich Police, the first sighting was reported around 9:30 p.m. on February 7th near the intersection of Tyndall Avenue and Grandview Drive. A second sighting was reported at approximately 12:29 a.m. on February 8th in the 1800 block of El Sereno Drive.

Police say the cougar was observed exhibiting non-aggressive behaviour in both incidents.

The sightings were reported to the BC Conservation Service, which has been notified and is aware of the activity in the area.

“These were non-aggressive sightings, and there’s no ongoing concern at this time,” said Insp. Damian Kowalewich of Saanich Police.

“We’re sharing the information so residents can remain aware and take reasonable precautions.”

Police noted that cougars are present throughout Vancouver Island, particularly in areas near parks and undeveloped land. While sightings in urban areas can be concerning, most encounters do not result in aggressive behaviour.

Anyone who encounters a cougar in an urban setting is asked to contact the BC Conservation Service for guidance.
