Comox Valley RCMP say they are still trying to identify a young girl who was seen outside a Courtenay Walmart on Friday, but have confirmed that a woman previously shown in photos has been cleared and is not connected to the case.

According to police, officers received a report on February 13th from a concerned resident about a child believed to be about 7-years-old.

The girl was reportedly seen around 11:15 a.m. outside the Walmart, near the left entrance on the south side of the building between Walmart and Staples.

She was said to be standing beside an adult who appeared to be soliciting camping gear or supplies using a large white sign.

Police said the child was described as having blonde hair and appearing dishevelled, with heavily soiled clothing. The accompanying adult was believed to be wearing a green camouflage-style jacket with the hood up, and their face was not visible.

Officers conducted patrols in the area shortly after receiving the report but were unable to locate the pair.

Investigators were not able to find surveillance footage of the child. However, they did locate footage of a woman purchasing a large white board.

Police initially sought to identify and speak with that woman to determine whether she was connected to the situation. RCMP have since confirmed that the woman in the photos has been cleared and is not associated with the child.

Police are continuing to ask anyone who may have seen the child or who has information about her identity to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321 and reference file number 2026-2286.
