A Ladysmith-area resident is facing potential charges after Central Saanich Police say they arrested a driver for impaired operation and seized a semi-automatic rifle from a vehicle.
According to police, officers were conducting proactive patrol late Wednesday night when they spotted an older model minivan committing a traffic violation.
Police say officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, at which point the driver briefly attempted to evade them before coming to a stop.
The driver was safely taken into custody.
Police say the driver showed signs of impairment and was arrested for impaired driving. During the arrest, officers spotted a loaded magazine in the driver’s pocket.
A subsequent search of the minivan allegedly uncovered a semi-automatic rifle and additional ammunition on the floor near the driver’s seat.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
The driver has been identified as a resident of the Ladysmith area. Police say the file is being forwarded to Crown counsel for charge approval.
