‘I thought I won $1,500’: Victoria man realizes his Scratch & Win prize is actually $150,000

Another Vancouver Island resident is celebrating a big win, this time in Victoria.

Frederick G. is $150,000 richer after scratching his way to the top prize on a $10 20X Scratch & Win ticket, purchased at Thrifty Foods on Royal Oak Drive.

At first, the Victoria resident thought the win was much smaller.

“I scratched my ticket and thought I won $1,500,” Frederick said. “Then I took my ticket to Thrifty Foods and they told me it was actually $150,000.”

The surprise came during a regular workday, making the moment even more unexpected.

“I was at work when I found out,” he said. “I thought, ‘oh cool!’”

Frederick said the first person he told was his sister, and he plans to celebrate by treating her to a nice dinner. While he does not have any major purchases planned, he says the winnings will go toward saving for retirement.

The win adds to what has been a strong run of lottery and gaming prizes claimed across Vancouver Island in recent weeks.

Two Nanaimo residents recently cashed in major PlayNow wins, including one $150,000 prize from a $3 wager and another totaling nearly $350,000.

Earlier this month, a Victoria resident won $500,000 playing Extra in a Lotto Max draw, while a Brentwood Bay man took home $675,000 after receiving a Set for Life ticket as a gift from his dad.

According to BCLC, players across British Columbia redeemed more than $51 million in winnings from Extra and more than $248 million from Lotto Max in 2025 alone.

For now, Frederick is enjoying the moment and a win that turned a routine scratch into a life-changing surprise.
