Thousands of residents in Oak Bay and parts of east Victoria were left without electricity Friday morning after what BC Hydro says was an equipment failure.

The outage began at approximately 7:20 a.m., impacting nearly 5,000 customers in the area. Early information from the utility indicated a equipment failure was responsible, with crews dispatched to the scene shortly after the power went out.

According to BC Hydro, the affected areas include:

  • West of Linkleas Avenue, east of Government Street, and south of Myrtle Avenue
  • West of Cowichan Street, east of Joan Crescent, north of Chandler Avenue, and south of Begbie Street

Crews remain on-site working to restore service. BC Hydro has listed an estimated restoration time of 12 p.m. on February 20th.

The outage comes on a cold morning, with temperatures hovering around -2°C in Greater Victoria.

The timing also coincides with Canada facing Finland in a men’s Olympic hockey semifinal, leaving some fans scrambling for alternate ways to watch the game as restoration efforts continue.
