Canada’s women’s hockey team narrowly missed out on gold after losing to Team USA in the finals at the Milan Cortina Games.
After a first period without any scoring, in which Canada recorded eight shots on goal and earned two power-play opportunities, tension, and anticipation continued to build.
The second period got underway with momentum carrying over, and Kirstin O’Neill scored just before the end of the period. She was assisted by Laura Stacey and Renata Fast.
Canada entered the third period leading 1–0, with a boarding penalty called against the US, helping the Canadian women maintain their dominance on the ice.
As the final minutes of the third period approached, the US pulled their goalie to add a sixth player on the ice and managed to score just before the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime tied 1–1.
Overtime was short-lived, as the US scored within the opening minutes to secure the win.
A strong effort was made by Team Canada, but they were unable to score that tie goal and ultimately settled for silver.
While gold slipped away in overtime, the Canadian women once again proved they belong at the top of the world’s hockey elite.
