BC throne speech delayed as day of mourning proclaimed for Tumbler Ridge shooting

Share

This week’s throne speech has been cancelled and Thursday, February 12th, has been proclaimed a day of mourning throughout BC following the mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge.

The throne speech was meant to open the new spring legislative session to outline the government’s goals for the coming session.

This speech was officially delayed as of Wednesday, because of the tragic mass shooting that claimed nine victims’ lives.

Mike Farnworth, Government House Leader; Á’a:líya Warbus, Official Opposition House Leader; and Rob Botterell, BC Greens House Leader have released a joint statement regarding the throne speech delay and day of mourning.

“The horrific shooting and tragic loss of life in Tumbler Ridge have devastated this small community and impacted people across BC, Canada and around the world,” they said.

“At noon, the legislative assembly will stand for a moment of silence in honour of the victims in Tumbler Ridge, their families and the entire community. The house will then adjourn.”

Furthermore, instead of delivering a speech on behalf of the Throne, at 2 p.m., the lieutenant governor will deliver a speech dedicated to the people of Tumbler Ridge.

“The people of British Columbia mourn together with the people of Tumbler Ridge,” the house leaders continued.

“We are united and will continue to ensure every possible support for community members in the coming days.”

As of this publication, the Province has not rescheduled the throne speech. If it is to happen, it may take place early next week.

However, Tuesday, February 17th is currently intended to be BC’s budget day. In light of the tragedy pushing back the speech from the throne, the budget session may also be impacted.

Premier David Eby and Nina Krieger, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, have also announced that they will be traveling to the affected community to meet with people who have been impacted.

They are scheduled to arrive in the community by Wednesday evening.

According to the Province, resources are being mobilized to support Tumbler Ridge and its residents, including mental-health and victims-services professionals.
