Another day, another lottery winner on Vancouver Island.

A Victoria resident is starting 2026 with a major reason to celebrate after winning $500,000 playing Extra in the January 6th, Lotto Max draw.

Douglas F. said the moment he scanned his ticket was something straight out of a cartoon.

“I was at Mount Douglas Market and checked a few tickets,” he recalled. “When I saw the $500,000 I felt like a cartoon character. My eyes popped out of my head.”

Douglas, who enjoys painting and sculpting in his spare time, said the first person he called was his wife.

“She was so shocked, she was shaking,” he said.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Petro-Canada located at the corner of Shelbourne Street and McKenzie Avenue in Victoria.

The latest win adds to what has been a strong start to the year for Vancouver Island lottery players.

In recent weeks alone, a Vancouver Island couple rang in the new year with a $500,000 win through Extra on a Lotto Max ticket, while a Brentwood Bay man took home $675,000 after receiving a Set for Life ticket from his father.

Just days earlier, a Victoria resident became $500,000 richer after hitting a Maxmillion prize in the December 26th Lotto Max draw.

One day later, Nanaimo resident Clifford S. won $500,000 through Extra on a December 27th Lotto 6/49 ticket after his wife scanned the ticket using the BCLC Lotto! App.

In 2025, B.C. lottery players redeemed more than $51 million in winnings from Extra and more than $248 million from Lotto Max, according to BCLC.
