VicPD are urging residents to slow down and stay alert on local roads after officers responded to a collision involving a pedestrian or cyclist every single day so far this year.
According to the police detachment, since January 1st, officers have attended incidents involving eight pedestrians, seven cyclists, and one person riding a scooter who were struck by vehicles in the city.
Police emphasized that the numbers represent real people moving through the community, noting that each collision carries the potential for serious or life-altering injuries.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” police said, adding that while everyone has a role to play, drivers carry a heightened duty of care when operating vehicles.
Officers warned that distractions, speeding, or impatience can have irreversible consequences.
Several serious incidents have already been reported this month.
On January 16th, a pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck by a Ford F-250 at the intersection of Yates and Douglas streets. On January 9th, another pedestrian was hit by a septic truck at Douglas and Chatham streets.
Earlier in the month, on January 7th, a woman suffered serious injuries following a hit-and-run at Hillside Avenue and Quadra Street.
Police are also investigating a separate incident involving a man in his 60s who was found in the middle of Bay Street. Investigators say it remains unclear what occurred in that case.
In a social media post, VicPD are asking drivers to slow down, remain attentive, and make deliberate choices behind the wheel. Police are reminding motorists to watch for cyclists, yield to pedestrians, and put phones away while driving.
“Together, we can prevent these collisions,” police said. “Together, we can keep people safe.”
