On January 2nd, two dogs were surrendered to the Victoria Humane Society (VHS) in critical condition.
The two dogs, Harry and Bosch, had been suffering from prolonged hunger, weakness and neglect, with both being severely emaciated and fragile.
“Despite everything they’ve endured, they are offering small tail wags and leaning into gentle interactions and cuddles from staff,” said VHS in a social media post.
The organization noted that recovery from severe emaciation can be a slow, complex and extremely costly process, as both dogs required extended emergency veterinary hospitalization, medically supervised refeeding, specialized diets, frequent blood work and constant monitoring.
According to VHS, the dogs’ owners had been overwhelmed by serious mental health challenges, addiction and financial hardship.
“When a person is in crisis, the care of their animals can quietly slip beyond their ability to manage,” said VHS.
“The impact of that struggle is often seen most clearly in the animals who rely entirely on them for survival.”
Unfortunately, Harry and Bosch’s circumstances are becoming increasingly prevalent.
VHS says that their staff are seeing more dogs arriving in this condition, which is directly connected to guardians who are struggling and unable to meet their needs.
“When intervention doesn’t happen early, animals are the ones who suffer the physical consequences,” the organization continued.
Since posting about Harry and Bosch’s condition, VHS has seen an influx of donations and support, which has helped the dogs begin their journey of recovery.
“We’re happy to share a hopeful update: yesterday they enjoyed a short, gentle stroll around the neighborhood, and they’re already looking brighter and stronger,” said VHS.
“Every day brings small improvements, and while they still have a long way to go, seeing them take those steps forward fills us with so much gratitude.”
VHS is a registered non-profit and charitable organization who rely solely on donations and volunteers to operate.
