Drivers heading over the Malahat this morning are being urged to use caution as Environment Canada warns of significant snowfall impacting the morning commute.
According to the weather agency, 10 to 15 centimetres of snow is forecast for the Malahat Highway near the summit as a frontal system moves across the South Coast.
Snow levels are expected to drop to around 300 metres, allowing snow to accumulate quickly during the morning hours.
As precipitation rates ease later this morning, conditions are expected to shift from snow back to rain.
Until then, travel may be challenging, with reduced visibility at times and a notable impact on rush-hour traffic likely.
Environment Canada notes that weather conditions in mountainous areas can change suddenly, increasing the risk of hazardous driving conditions.
Motorists are advised to turn on headlights, reduce speed, and maintain a safe following distance. Drivers are also encouraged to check shiftintowinter.ca before travelling for winter driving tips and to ensure vehicles are equipped with appropriate winter tires or chains.
Up-to-date road conditions are available through DriveBC, and travellers are reminded to continue monitoring weather alerts and forecasts.
