BC residents will be able to save some money on their taxes again this year with the provincial government providing rental tax credits and homeowner grants for those who are eligible.
The renter’s tax credit will provide up to $400 for those who meet the criteria.
The credit is meant for low and moderate-income renters and families with an adjusted income of $63,000 per year, or less.
However, those with an adjusted income between $63,000 and $83,000 may receive a reduced amount.
Meanwhile, the homeowner grant provides tax relief for British Columbians with a threshold set at $2.075 million for 2026.
The basic grant amounts remain unchanged to last year’s figures.
Homeowners in Victoria and the surrounding area within the Capital Regional District (CRD) will receive as much as $570.
Those who live outside of the CRD, Fraser Valley area and Metro Vancouver may receive up to $770 for their properties.
Furthermore, seniors, veterans and people with disabilities, or those living with a relative who has a disability, may be eligible for additional grants for a total of $845 in the CRD.
According to the Province, in 2025, nearly 500,000 seniors and more than 19,000 people with disabilities received this extra support.
For a property to be eligible it must be the homeowners’ principal residence.
Homeowners must apply to receive the grant anytime during the tax year. The Province says the best time to apply is in May after property tax notices have been received and before the property-tax due date, which is typically in July.
