A 29-year-old driver was killed following a single-vehicle crash on Highway 4 on New Year’s Day.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at approximately 8:30 p.m. on January 1st after reports of a crash between Little Qualicum Falls Road and Chalet Road in the Whiskey Creek area.

Police say a grey Acura travelling toward Port Alberni left the roadway, went down an embankment, and struck several trees.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A lone passenger in the vehicle was taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Investigators believe the vehicle may have lost control while navigating a corner, causing it to skid off the highway.

Highway 4 was closed for several hours while police conducted their investigation and crews worked to remove the vehicle from the embankment.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage who has not yet spoken with police is asked to contact the Oceanside RCMP at (250) 248-6111 and reference file number 2026-23.
