An 8-month-old bulldog mix is recovering after being found injured in a ditch along Lake Cowichan Road earlier this month.
The puppy was discovered on January 10th by a passerby near Duncan. Unable to move, she was taken to an emergency veterinary hospital, which then contacted the BC SPCA Cowichan branch.
According to BC SPCA Cowichan manager Colin Owen-Flood, the puppy had suffered a broken front right leg and appeared to have been in the ditch for some time.
“She was very thin and couldn’t move because of the injury,” Owen-Flood said.
“She also had old puncture wounds inside both ears, along with abrasions and scabbing on her face and body. We don’t know what she’s been through, but we’re incredibly grateful someone found her.”
Veterinarians performed surgery to repair the broken leg, placing pins in the bone to stabilize it. The puppy is now on pain medication and recovering in foster care with a BC SPCA staff member.
“The recovery time for this type of surgery is typically eight to 12 weeks,” Owen-Flood said, noting that strict kennel rest is required to allow the leg to heal properly.
The puppy is being fed small, frequent meals as part of her recovery to help her regain weight, according to the veterinarian.
Despite her injuries, staff say the puppy has shown an affectionate and joyful personality throughout her recovery.
“She’s a total love bug who soaks up every bit of attention,” Owen-Flood said.
Foster caregivers have nicknamed her “Spooner” because she enjoys being cuddled while sleeping.
“She doesn’t believe in personal space and can’t get enough human contact.”
The puppy is reported to be getting along well with the other dog in her foster home and has a healthy appetite. She will be available for adoption once she has fully recovered from surgery.
