BC SPCA forced to put down severely injured dog found in Port Alberni

Earlier this month, a dog that was found severely injured and tethered to a trailer in Port Alberni.

After assessing the severity of the dog’s injuries, it was determined that euthanasia is the most humane course of action.

The BC SPCA Alberni-Clayoquot says they received a call from a concerned individual who had discovered the black lab-cross dog.

Upon first glance, the dog’s wounds were thought to be exterior only, primarily on his head and mouth.

BC SPCA team members rescued the dog, bringing him to the nearest veterinary clinic for immediate treatment.

The trailer he was tied to was located on Bruce Street, in Port Alberni’s Southport neighborhood.

His wounds were cleaned and he was given medication to help manage the pain; however, further examination revealed the dog’s injuries were far worse than initially thought.

It was discovered that the dog had suffered a broken jaw, several skull fractures, internal bleeding and infection.

Despite extensive care, the dog’s condition kept worsening, so the attending veterinarian recommended euthanasia for the dog as the most humane way to relieve his suffering.

With this decision being made, BC SPCA members are seeking to identify the dog’s owner.

The dog is described as a black lab-cross, weighing approximately 60 pounds, with a small white patch on his chest and a small amount of white on his back right toes.

He did not have tags or any form of permanent identification like a microchip or a tattoo.

“The BC SPCA wants to thank the community member for reaching out to get this dog help, and the neighbors for their cooperation in the ongoing investigation,” wrote a spokesperson for the organization in a media release.

Anyone with information about the dog or his owner should call the BC SPCA Animal Helpline at 1-855-622-7722. The line is open between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., seven days a week.
