Some storefronts in downtown Victoria have been transformed into unique arts installations by local artists.
There are three spaces which have benefitted from the City of Victoria’s Storefront Activation Program, whose goal it is to bring new, positive energy into the downtown core.
The three projects selected are all aimed at transforming underutilized spaces into creative hubs for learning and community connection.
The first of these is the Vancouver Island Visual Arts Society (VIVAS).
Their 1101 Yates Street space will soon transform into a 9,000 square-foot creative hub with 20 to 25 affordable artist studios. Additionally, the space will be able to accommodate exhibitions with space for workshops and artist talks.
The second is Monkey C’s Artcade, which is gearing up to open “The Alien Lab,” a 1,000-square-foot interactive space at 706 Fort Street.
This installation will invite visitors to co-create music and art using salvaged technology. The Artcade’s expansion is set to open in early 2026.
Lastly, the third space to benefit from the City’s programming is the Beehive Fibre Arts Centre.
This arts centre just opened on November 17th at 1205 Blanshard Street, and offers a 5,500 square-foot space for fibre arts classes, workshops and rotating exhibitions. This arts space will be open through March 2026.
“These projects showcase the incredible creativity and resilience of our arts community,” said Mayor Marianne Alto.
“By activating storefronts for art and engagement, we’re enriching the cultural fabric of our city and making space for people to connect.”
The Victoria Storefront Activation Program is funded through OUR DWTN and Create Victoria. This programming aims to increase access to spaces for arts and culture, while providing opportunities for artists to showcase their talents and engage with communities.
Though this funding was on the chopping block as Victoria’s council worked through some difficult budget talks, both OUR DWTN and Create Victoria will both receive funding in 2026. However, they will both be receiving a reduced budget compared to 2025.
