Another year in the books and the District of Saanich has once again declared the winner of the annual Mayor and Council Holiday Card Contest.
This year, the winner is Grade 4 student and Saanich resident Oskar Williams.
According to the District, dozens of submissions were made, but Mayor Dean Murdock was drawn to Williams’ design because of his attention to detail and the incorporation of Saanich’s official bird, the great horned owl.
“Oskar did a marvelous job drawing the Great Horned Owl [sic] and adding a holiday twist. I love the Santa Hat, all the bright colours, and the owl’s recognizable large yellow eyes,” said Mayor Murdock.
“Each young artist should be very proud of what they created this year. The thoughtfulness and creativity that went into each submission shines brightly! I look forward to seeing what next year brings.”
Other designs that were considered this year showcased what children in Saanich love most about the holidays, including presents, ice skating, snow angels and Santa Claus.
The District has expressed their thanks to the students, teachers, educators, parents and caregivers for encouraging this tradition to keep going strong.
As the winner, Williams’ design will be featured on the mayor and council’s holiday card this year, and will be shared on District social media channels.
Furthermore, Williams will get the chance to join Mayor Murdock as “Mayor for the Morning” in the new year, giving him the opportunity to learn about the mayor’s responsibilities and the role of local government.
