A 19-year-old Qualicum Beach man has been charged in connection with a series of incidents earlier this year in which rocks were intentionally placed on a Vancouver Island.
The rocks caused multiple vehicles to collide with them.
Oceanside RCMP say the incidents occurred during the overnight hours of May 3rd and May 4th of this year, along Highway 19 between the Little Qualicum River Bridge and Corcan Road.
In total, five vehicles struck rocks placed on the roadway, resulting in a range of damage.
No injuries were reported.
Police were first called just after midnight on May 3rd when a northbound vehicle struck a large stack of rocks in the slow lane and veered off the highway into an embankment.
About an hour later, while police and emergency crews were still on scene, another stack of rocks was found in the southbound slow lane near Corcan Road and removed before any vehicles struck it.
A second set of incidents was reported shortly after 2 a.m. on May 4th, when rocks placed in both northbound and southbound lanes near the Corcan Road overpass were hit by three vehicles.
One vehicle sustained radiator damage, another suffered a flat tire, and a third showed no visible damage.
Following a lengthy investigation, Oceanside RCMP submitted a report to Crown counsel. One charge of mischief over $5,000 has now been approved against the 19-year-old man.
His first court appearance is scheduled for January 20th, 2026.
At the time of the incidents, police warned the acts had the potential to cause serious harm and appealed to the public for information. RCMP have since thanked the community for its assistance during the investigation.
Because the matter is now before the courts, police say no further details will be released.
