A pair of Salt Spring Island residents are starting the winter with a life-changing surprise after winning $1 million in a recent Lotto 6/49 draw.

David Aksenchuk and Amber Little matched the guaranteed prize in the October 22nd draw and checked their ticket using the BCLC Lotto! app.

According to Aksenchuk, the moment was so shocking he “tried not to lose control” when the screen revealed the big win. Little said her family’s reaction came with wide-eyed excitement.

“My family said, ‘Holy! Good for you!’” she shared, recalling the moment she broke the news.

The ticket was purchased at Moby’s Pub on Upper Ganges Road, a local watering hole that can now claim a million-dollar sale.

Both winners are planning to use the windfall in practical ways. Aksenchuk hopes to buy a new car and put the rest toward retirement. Little plans to invest her share and help support her children.

According to BCLC, lottery players across the province have already redeemed more than $63 million in Lotto 6/49 prizes so far this year.

Lotto 6/49 draws take place on Wednesday and Saturday evenings, offering a Classic Jackpot worth $5 million and a Gold Ball Draw that guarantees at least $1 million, with jackpots that can grow significantly higher.
