If you have caught a strange smell outside today and wondered if someone forgot garbage day, the mystery has been solved.
In a media advisory, the Capital Regional District (CRD) said it is dealing with a blockage in the Residual Solids Conveyance Line, the pipe that normally moves treated sludge from the McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Hartland Landfill.
Since the pipe is out of commission, the CRD is hauling the material by truck through Esquimalt, Victoria and Saanich to keep things moving.
The temporary detour includes stops on Interurban Road, Courtland Avenue and Hartland Landfill.
Residents may notice more trucks on the road at all hours, a bit of extra traffic, some unexpected noise and, every now and then, an unpleasant smell.
The CRD says repairs are starting right away and crews are working to ease the impact on residential areas. They hope to get the system back to normal soon so the region can return to its regular, predictable levels of stink.
