This Saturday, November 22nd, a mixed-media art exhibition, sheeshe ‘ch thareṛ | a crack in the mirror, is debuting at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, exploring Sikh visual culture through a contemporary lens.

Organized and circulated by The Reach Gallery Museum in Abbotsford and guest curated by Sajdeep Soomal, this exhibition features recent works by Simranpreet Anand, including collaborative pieces with artist and ethnomusicologist Conner Singh VanderBeek.

Anand pulls from Sikh sacred spaces and everyday life, using synthetic, plastic-laden materials to explore how spirituality, mass production, and cultural identity intertwine.

“a crack in the mirror is an intimate exploration of Sikh visual culture. Through lived experience, the artists are looking closely at the tensions imbued within the mass production of materials used in sacred spaces and belongings,” said AGGV Curator of Contemporary Art, Toby Lawrence.

The exhibition’s title is inspired by a popular Punjabi folk song, which narrates the inner turmoil of a newly married couple—leading to a crack in the woman’s mirror.

The crack in the mirror marks the apocalyptic-yet ordinary moment when your way of thinking—your particular mindset—starts to fracture and is broken open by the force of experience,” said guest curator Sajdeep Soomal.

This exhibition launches at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria this Saturday, November 22nd and runs until April 12th, 2026.
