32nd annual CHEK Drive Thru returns this December to support Island families in need

CHEK’s long-running holiday fundraiser is back next month, bringing the community together once again to help local families who are feeling the squeeze this season.

The 32nd Annual CHEK Drive Thru and Telethon takes place on Thursday, December 5th, in support of The Salvation Army’s Christmas assistance program.

With food costs still high and many households facing tight budgets, the need across Vancouver Island is expected to be even greater this year.

Last year’s event raised more than $100,000 and collected over 3,100 toys, thanks to the generosity of viewers, businesses, and community members.

During the 2024 broadcast, CHEK’s Jeff King described it as one of their favourite nights of the year and praised Vancouver Islanders for showing up “year after year after year.”

The Salvation Army says it is preparing to help more than 2,600 children and teens in the Capital Region alone. Nearly 6,500 people received support through the program last Christmas, and that number is projected to rise again this holiday season.

This year’s live Drive Thru and Telethon will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, December 5th.

Donations can be made by calling 1-877-255-4445 during the broadcast. Those who prefer to donate in person can drop off toys or cash at CHEK’s Kings Road studio in Victoria, West Shore Parks and Recreation in Colwood, or Sunshine Mountain Ford Lincoln in Nanaimo.

Maximum Express Courier is also offering free pickup for toy donations collected at homes or businesses. Residents simply need to call the company during business hours and mention the CHEK Drive Thru.

In the days leading up to the event, several local businesses across Greater Victoria and the Mid-Island will accept unwrapped toy donations, including popular spots such as Buddies Toys, Dodd’s Furniture, Old Farm Market, Mazzei Electric, and Ruffell & Brown, among many others.

For those who prefer to donate online, CHEK’s virtual “Online Kettle” is already open and accepting contributions.

CHEK is also hosting its second annual Upside Christmas charity concert on December 10th at the McPherson Playhouse.

The show features performances by Michael Kaeshammer, Colin James, Miina, and magician Jason Verners. All proceeds will be donated to The Salvation Army through the Drive Thru.

Tickets are available through the Royal McPherson Theatre Society and are expected to sell out quickly so grab yours soon!
