An 18-year-old Nanaimo man has died following a crash on Highway 1 late Sunday night, and investigators are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage to help determine what happened.
According to BC Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 10:30 p.m. on November 2nd near Morden Road when a black Audi S3 sedan crashed in the northbound lanes and caught fire.
Police say a second dark-coloured vehicle, possibly a black Honda Civic, was seen driving near the Audi moments before the crash but did not stop at the scene.
“We need to know more about that second dark car, possibly a black Honda Civic, that was driving in close proximity to the black Audi in the moments before it crashed,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol.
“Dash-camera video and witnesses will be key to learning exactly what caused this collision.”
The driver of the Audi, a 19-year-old Nanaimo man, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His passenger, the 18-year-old, died at the scene.
Investigators have not ruled out criminality and are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has dash camera footage from the area to contact BC Highway Patrol – Duncan at 250-746-2751 and mention file number (7001) 2025-2168.
