West Shore RCMP officers now equipped with body-worn cameras

West Shore RCMP have now joined a growing list of detachments using body-worn cameras.

Officers in that regoin will now be seen wearing body-worn cameras as part of an effort to increase transparency, gather reliable evidence, and enhance public trust.

The cameras will capture real-time interactions between police and the public, providing a clear record that can be used to support investigations and accountability measures.

Officers have received training on how and when to use the devices, as well as on protocols for data security and privacy protection, according to a media release from West Shore RCMP.

“The introduction of body-worn cameras represents an important step forward in how we serve our communities,” said Insp. Stephen Rose, Acting Officer-in-Charge of West Shore RCMP.

“By enhancing transparency and helping capture reliable evidence, these cameras strengthen both public confidence and the quality of service we provide.”

Police officers will activate their cameras before arriving at calls for service. This includes incidents such as crimes in progress, investigations, mental health calls, interactions with individuals in crisis, public disorder events, or any other situation where documentation could support their duties.

When a camera’s light flashes green, it is on and ready. Once the officer presses the activation button, the light turns red and begins recording both audio and video.

Other detachments on Vancouver Island already using body-worn cameras include Ucluelet, Ahousaht, and Tofino, which were part of the BC RCMP’s pilot project and first wave of the rollout last fall.

Sidney/North Saanich RCMP officers began using the cameras in August.

RCMP emphasize that the devices are not used for continuous 24-hour recording, surveillance, or during intimate searches.

All footage will be securely stored and accessed only for lawful and authorized purposes, in accordance with strict privacy and data protection policies.
