This year marked the first annual End2End cycling challenge—a non-stop race from Victoria to Port Hardy with the goal of raising money for the families of cancer-stricken Vancouver Island children.
The race covers over 1,000 kilometres in just 48 hours, and its inaugural year saw $110,000 raised for the Island Kids Cancer Association.
Looking ahead to 2026’s End2End challenge, a Victoria woman with a recent cancer diagnosis is looking to kick-start the summer event this Thanksgiving by raising money to shave her head.
Kathy Ilott was diagnosed with breast cancer in March and has since been overcome with fear and anxiety.
Ilott says to fight these feelings and emotions, she is urging her friends to sponsor a chemotherapy-induced buzz cut for her.
Thus far, her endeavour has already raised $6,500 for the Island Kids Cancer Association through the coming 2026 End2End race.
“I have been involved with many people from End2End for quite some time now, and I deeply admire their passion and dedication,” said Ilott, who has spent many years working with cancer charities.
“Recognizing the importance of staying involved and contributing to such a meaningful cause, I decided to embrace the situation with a positive attitude, channeling the sentiment of, ‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.’”
Ilott says that through this difficult time, she is reminded that connection is the most important thing. She noted that whenever she feels down, she looks at the donation page and is reminded of her deep connections and the generosity of others.
Since 2017, the Island Kids Cancer Association has supported hundreds of children with cancer diagnoses and their families on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.
The organization offers programs and services focussed on financial support, mental health and countering the isolation often experienced by families.
End2End is entirely a volunteer effort, with no paid staff, and almost all the operating expenses have been absorbed by the initiative’s generous sponsors.
With Ilott’s kindness and efforts towards the cause, End2End is officially beginning their second campaign with the goal of surpassing their first year’s donations.
“I am truly blessed to be surrounded by such caring and supportive individuals, and I firmly believe that raising awareness and offering our support to organizations like Island Kids Cancer Association are essential steps in supporting childhood cancer,” said Ilott.
“Beyond that, this initiative resonates deeply with me because it emphasizes the power of community; IKCA embodies the spirit of compassion and unity, and it is incredibly heartwarming to know that the funds raised will remain within our island community, directly benefiting the children who need it most.”
