Victoria International Airport among several hacked in cyber incident

Victoria International Airport (YYJ) has confirmed it was among one of several locations targeted in a hacking incident.

The airport was briefly forced to switch to manual operation this week after hackers gained access to its public-address system through a cloud-based software issue.

An unauthorized audio message was broadcast across the terminal before airport staff quickly shut it down. The problem was resolved within minutes, and officials say no flights or passenger safety were affected.

“An unauthorized audio message was broadcast over the public address system at Victoria International Airport (YYJ). Airport staff acted quickly to shut it down. The incident was related to a cloud-based software issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and thank our passengers for their patience and cooperation,” the airport said in a statement.

YYJ was one of several airports targeted in similar incidents this week.

Airports in Kelowna and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, also reported hackers gaining access to public systems and broadcasting pro-Hamas and anti-Trump messages.

“Transport Canada is working closely with federal security partners, including law enforcement, to ensure there were no impacts on the safety and security of airport operations, and to mitigate disruption from similar incidents in the future,” spokesperson Sau Sau Liu said in an email.
