A Vancouver Island First Nation is making a major move in BC’s gaming industry after announcing plans to acquire two well-known casinos on the mainland.
Through its economic arm, Petroglyph Development Group (PDG), Snuneymuxw First Nation has entered into agreements with Great Canadian Entertainment to purchase River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond and Chances Casino Maple Ridge.
Once the deal is finalized and approved, PDG is expected to become one of the largest casino operators in the province and the biggest Indigenous-owned gaming operator in Canada by revenue.
In a media release, Snuneymuxw Chief Mike Wyse said the acquisition represents a dream that has been years in the making.
“By securing ownership in four thriving casino operations, we are realizing long-term economic independence and creating lasting prosperity for our people and the communities we serve,” he said.
“We respectfully acknowledge the Musqueam Nation, on whose territory River Rock Casino is located, and the Katzie Nation, whose territory includes Chances Maple Ridge.”
This move follows PDG’s earlier acquisitions of Casino Nanaimo and Elements Casino Victoria. PDG President Erralyn Joseph said the expansion is about strengthening the Nation’s economy and building meaningful partnerships across BC.
“These acquisitions are aligned with our commitment to restore a strong Snuneymuxw economy, one that drives growth and collaboration across territories,” she said.
Matthew Anfinson, CEO of Great Canadian Entertainment, said his company is proud to see the casinos transfer to Snuneymuxw ownership.
“PDG has proven to be a leader in casino operations, and we’re delighted to have the opportunity to hand over these properties to the PDG team,” he said.
Musqueam Chief Wayne Sparrow said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to collaboration and community benefit.
“Musqueam is a leading economic contributor within our traditional territory, and we thank Snuneymuxw for approaching us on this opportunity,” he said.
“We’ll be working together on the details and consulting with our community members in the coming weeks.”
“Under Snuneymuxw ownership, the revenue from these properties will help fuel local growth and reinvestment,” said PDG CEO Ian Simpson.
“Our goal is to deliver world-class hospitality and entertainment that respects the interconnectedness of all life.”
For Snuneymuxw, this step represents more than an investment.
