A report of a driver sleeping behind the wheel of a running SUV in Saanich led police to a large quantity of suspected cocaine and cash Thursday afternoon.

Saanich Police say the drugs and cash were seized after officers responded to a report of an impaired driver in a Blanshard Street parking lot.

Just before 4 p.m. on October 23rd, Saanich Police were called to the 3500 block of Blanshard Street after a witness reported seeing a man smoking from a glass pipe behind the wheel of a Mercedes SUV.

When the officer arrived, they found a man and a woman unconscious in the front seats of the vehicle, which was still running.

Police say the officer spotted drugs and drug paraphernalia on the driver’s lap and removed the vehicle’s keys when the man attempted to flee.

The driver was arrested, and a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of what police believe to be one kilogram of cocaine and more than $20,000 in cash.

The driver was issued a 90-day administrative driving prohibition and released while the investigation continues.

Saanich Police say the case remains under investigation.
