Swimmers eager to return to Saanich Commonwealth Place will have to wait a little longer, as several pools and amenities at the recreation centre remain closed for ongoing construction and repairs.
In a media release, the District of Saanich says while repairs to the competition pool are nearly complete and it will reopen on Monday, October 20th.
Meanwhile, the rest of the aquatic facility won’t be ready until Wednesday, November 12th which is nearly three weeks later than previously planned.
That means the wave pool, teach and tots pools, hot tub, sauna and steam room will stay closed while crews finish installing the new water slide and complete structural remediation work.
Registered swimming programs will also be pushed back, with participants to be notified by email and credited for any missed classes once new start dates are set.
In the meantime, Saanich Access Pass holders can continue using the pools at Gordon Head Recreation Centre and other regional aquatic facilities by presenting their pass with a valid sticker.
The District says it recognizes the inconvenience but adds the extra time will allow important upgrades to be completed, including the new slide, a colourful replacement for the original 1993 model that had reached the end of its lifespan.
Once finished, the slide is expected to add a burst of fun back into the popular community hub, which has been closed since late August for maintenance and renovations.
