According to a recent poll conducted by BC-based Research Co., Premier David Eby and his party hold a significant lead over the Conservative Party of BC one year after the province’s latest election.
In 2024’s provincial election, the BC NDP won a narrow majority with 47 seats compared to the Opposition, the Conservatives’ 40 seats.
Meanwhile the BC Green Party has two seats, OneBC has two seats and there are two Independents.
Well, just one year after Premier Eby’s narrow win, Research Co.’s poll results indicate that the people of British Columbia are generally happy with what he has been doing in office.
When asked who respondents believed would make the best premier, of all the party leaders, Eby led with 37% over John Rustad, who only had a vote percentage of 21%. The BC Greens’ newly elected leader Emily Lowan was next highest with 12%, followed by Karin Kirkpatrick with 4% and Dallas Brodie’s 3%.
Additionally, the poll found that the BC NDP are ahead of all challengers in most aspects throughout British Columbia’s political scene.
If another election were to be held tomorrow, 44% of respondents said they would vote NDP, versus the Conservatives’ 33%, while the BC Greens would take 10% of the vote.
On a regional basis, the Conservatives are leading only in Northern BC, with 49% and in the Fraser Valley with 46%, while the BC NDP is ahead on Vancouver Island with 41%, in Southern BC with 41% and in Metro Vancouver with 38%.
“The BC NDP is holding on to 86% of the voters who supported them in the October 2024 provincial election,” said Mario Canseco, President of Research Co.
“The retention rate is lower for the BC Conservatives (78%) and the BC Greens (74%).”
For key issues in BC, the top issue was revealed to be housing, poverty and homelessness. Following these matters of housing and financial security was: the economy and jobs, health care, crime and public safety, the environment, accountability, education and lastly, energy.
When asked which of the main party leaders is better suited to handle these specific issues and more, Eby proved to be ahead of Rustad on seven of them, while the leaders tied on one matter.
Premier Eby led over Rustad on education (44% to 26%), the environment (43% to 24%), health care (41% to 28%), housing, poverty and homelessness (40% to 28%), energy (40% to 29%), the economy and jobs (38% to 31%) and accountability (37% to 30%).
The two leaders were tied on who would best manage crime and public safety in the province with 34% confidence apiece.
Results for Research Co.’s poll is based on an online survey conducted from October 1st to October 3rd, in which 801 adults in British Columbia were polled.
